What exactly happens in Dry skin condition?

Normal, healthy skin is coated with a thin layer of natural lipids or fatty substances. They lock the moisture in leaving the skin soft and supple. The skin is 75 % water, which is kept in the skin by lipids (oils) on its surface and humectants within the skin. Humectants are sponge like substances that draw water back into the skin. If the skin has less oil, the skin is dry and if the skin has less moisture the skin is dehydrated! Severe diarrhea, vomiting, high fever, profuse sweating during exercise can dry out the skin. The first sign of dehydration in our skin is a loss of elasticity.
